Benghazi (libya)

Hi, my name is Daniel and I’m from Bengasi. Bengasi is a city in northeastern Libya with 950,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate), on the Gulf of Sidra, a part of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the second largest city in Libya, and the dominating in the eastern Cyrenaica region, and is the capital of the district of Benghazi.

Benghazi, Darnah, Berenice are the different names of this city, noted that Berenice was the name of the city where historic battles took place, especially in World War II.
The modern Benghazi is a little southwest of the site of the ancient Greek city of Berenice or Berenicis. The city was founded in 446 BC C.
Benghazi is a big city but it remains architecturally attractive, overlooking the sea and a marina, and many beaches make up the coastline. Most of Benghazi are modern buildings, but the old city is good, with covered alleyways. It's especially crowded on Fridays, when people fill the fill the streets, shopping.
The Port of Benghazi, called Euesperides (or Hesperides) at that time, was founded by the ancient Greeks in the 6th Century BC. The Greeks passed it to Ptolemy III, Egyptian pharaoh, naming it Berenice to honor the pharaoh’s wife. The city’s modern name honors a benefactor named Ghazi (Bani Ghazi means “Ghazi’s descendants.
The Port of Benghazi was subject to heavy damage in the Second World War.
Today, the Port of Benghazi it is a modern economic center with busy finance and manufacturing sectors. The city’s multi-ethnic population is dominated by persons of Arab descent.
Important industries include salt processing, oil refining, food processing, cement manufacturing, tanning, brewing and sponge and tuna fishing. The region of Benghazi has some agriculture producing cereals, dates, olives, and livestock for wool and flesh. Benghazi's main exports are sponges, hides and wool. Fresh water is provided by one of the world's largest desalinization plants.

Benghazi has several national government buildings, and a small old part from the times of Italian colonization.
