ROME

Rome is a city located in the South of Europe, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, and capital of Italy. Among the different Italian regions, it is settle in the Lazio Region. Rome is a city near the Mediterranean Sea, with very important harbors. This city is very well-known for its great battles and conquests during the Middle Ages and, of course, for the great Empire of Julius Caesar and other emperors . The name of Rome comes from the two brothers that died for its throne, Romulus and Remus.

Rome, the “eternal city”, is so called because it is a place of great beauty, contrast and life. Rome is an ecletic city: the religious world centre of Catholic Church, the fabulous ruins of the centre of the Roman Empire, and modern, bustling Rome. All three seem incongruous, yet they live inside and beside each other with great ease. You will soon realise Rome was build to rule and dominate the world. Everything is on a massive scale, solid and “eternal”.

Nowadays, Rome is a very charming city in a touristic, historical and religious point of view. Inside Rome, we can also find the Vatican City,an independant State, the golden city where we can enjoy the Sistine Chapel.
The Italians know the Mediterranean Sea under the name of Tyrrhenian Sea.

You have to discover the greatness of Rome wandering about to see all the Monuments, Museums, Buildings, Churches and Basilicas, Catacombs and Rome’s Castels. Don't loose a walk in the gardens and villas or in search of the wonderful fountains of the city.
If you want to feel the Roman atmosphere take a walk through the local typical markets! And don’t forget to taste the Roman cuisine which is not only pizza.

Rome is twin town with other cities like: Paris, (France),Sienana Italy),the place where the Roman wolf comes from.Florence (Italy),Achacachi (Bolivia), Friendship and solidarity agreement with many other cities in the world.

Rome has never organized Mediterranean games, but with the 2009 edition in Pescara, this is the third time that Italy organizes these kind of games.

The most important harbor in Rome is Civitavecchia. Nowadays, it is a cruise and ferries port and also the main maritime link with Sardinia and Barcelona. Fishing is pushed into the background.

The city of Rome to had a lot of problems with the pollution that produced the cars and the day 10/02/2004 decided that the cars could not circulate in the streets of Rome, or else be fined.
In Rome there were frequent the poisonings caused by the lead of the pipes that transported the water. Nowadays it is alarming the constant loss of sweet water. And some polution goes directly to the Mediterranean sea.
We have to think of something to stop contamination in a city such as Rome, otherwise we will not be able to call it "The Eternal City" anymore.
