Genoa
Hi!
Genoa is situated in the north of Italy in the gulf of Genoa. Here the Mediterranean is called Ligurian Sea . It has a population of 610.830 inhabitants. It is the capital of the region of Liguria. We speak Italian but also our own dialect.
The town has one of the most important seaports of the Mediterranean and Italy. Due to this, the commerce is one of the main economic activities along with the industry.
It is also a touristic destination, near all the cruises stop here. One of the most famous monuments is the “Palazzo Ducale” situated in Ferrari square and another emblematic monument is the house of Cristopher Columbus. For its rich architecture and the old part of the city Genoa is also considerated a cultural and historic town. In 2006 it was included in the world heritatge list by the UNESCO.
Genoa also has the second biggest aquarium in Europe. In 2004, Genoa was chosen the European Capital of culture because of its art, gastronomy, architecture and history.
Genoa is twin town with cities like Baltimore,Huelva, Guayaquil, Marsella, Buenos Aires and Lima.
Genoa has got a lot of green parks and it is considerated an ecological city, and for many times a lot of ecological protests started in it, like the claims for the Kyoto protocol. One of the most recent problems is that on the coast there is a lot ot traffic of commercial ships and ferries and this damages the wildlife in the zone.
